African American Muslim Men in United States

The History of African American Muslim Men in the United States of America (USA) comes with triumphs that not a lot of other communities have come across.

African American Muslim Men

The term African American along with Black American, or Afro-American is used to refer to the American residents and citizens who have ancestry linked with the native inhabitants of sub Saharan Africa. Many of the African American Muslim Men and African Americans in general are descendants of inhabitants of West Africa and Central Africa, many of which were brought into the United States against their will to become slaves. In many cases the term also refers to immigrants from African and Caribbean nations.

Brief History of African American Muslim Men

African American Muslim Men alone account for one of largest ethnic minority in the United States. The history of African American Muslim Men in the country dates back a long time, about the 16^th century during the slave trade era, there were some slaves that managed to rise up against Spanish explorer, Lucas Vasquez de Allyon. There have been African Americans ever since, important events have also occurred from that occurrence during the slave trade up till the modern day where the president of the United States is actually a Black American of Kenyan descent with his father initially being a Black Muslim.

Although a high percentage of the Africans that were brought into the country as slaves during the slave trade era were African Muslims, many of them either converted or were forced to convert into Christianity during that era, with some practising Islam secretly.

The Nation of Islam and African American Muslim Men

However during the 20^th century some of the African Americans converted back into Islam, this was as a result of the heavy influence of nationalist groups that promoted the religion during the 1900s and the most prominent of these groups being the Nation of Islam that was found in 1930 by a prominent Muslim, although that group is not considered Muslims at all, it was not considered to be a mainstream Islam movement during its inception but it was still very influential. One of the more prominent members who actually went on to lead the Nation of Islam was Islamic activist Malcolm X.

Malcolm X was considered by some to be one of the most famous and influential African American Muslim Men. He was the first person to start the movement of Black Americans towards mainstream Islam. African American Muslim Men make about Half of a fifth of the total Muslim population in the United States.

African American Muslim Men in The Nation of Islam was an extremist group and in the opinion of many both African American and native American both Christian and many Muslims the group was very far from the truth as they preached balck supremacy and encouraged racial tensions against the native white people often labelling them as devils. Many such groups were developed in the early 1900s by religious extremists are not as popular today.

African American Muslim Women

Islam in America is one of the most prominent religions in the nation especially amongst the ethnic minorities such as African American Muslim Women, the majority being the black people or African Americans which erroneously refers to the African Americans in the nation as well as the Caribbean Americans. Islam came into America a bit more than a hundred years ago about the 1880s to the early 1900s. During that time span numerous Muslims, the numbers entering thousands migrated into the United States from Asia, more specifically South Asia and also from the Ottoman Empire.

Quite surprisingly unlike most other migrations they did not actually settle down into distinct settlements, they just simply merged with the wide society and integrated into the local communities and became part of the large society.

That is how Islam came into the nation of America. African American Muslim Women come from various backgrounds and though a lot of them are Black Muslims there are still significant numbers of them from other ethnicities. The native born Muslim Women are African American Muslim Women and they contribute to about a quarter of the total population. Although some people confuse the Nation of Islam with African American Muslim Women, this may not necessarily be the case.

Black Muslims and African American Muslim Women

There are numerous Black Muslims in the country, although the rate of racism and segregation in the country seems to have significantly reduced it cannot be said that there is no form of racism against Black Muslims in the USA. Many of the victims of this racial injustice and or religious segregation are the Black African American Muslim Women that are living in United States of America.

America is a nation with a large cultural and ethnic diversity, that has some of the most ethnic diverse communities in the world. Living in this country as an ethic minority is not always as easy as it seems.

Hijabs for African American Muslim Women

Islam is a religion of purity and as such there are dressing obligations that Muslims have to comply with, African American Muslim Women especially are not expected to just dress as they wish, there are certain clothes that Black African American Muslim Women just cannot wear because it exposes too much of their bodies and that is against the religion of Islam. The women are obligated to cover their feminine curves by staying away from tight clothes; it is also a tradition of many Muslims that they are supposed to cover their hair when in the midst of Men other than their Husbands. This means that more often they are wearing scarfs to cover their hair and long flowing dresses that cover all of their bodies.

This unique dressing obligation has its rewards for African American Muslim Women and Muslim Women in general, in that it complies with the instructions in the Quran. Often the Balck Muslim Women are looked down upon because of this in the United States where subtle racial discrimination exists. The strong Black African American Muslim Women is able to live with all of this because she knows that there is a reward for her in the afterlife!

African American Black Muslim Woman – A Reverts Story

“I want to share what my own personal experience has been like as a Black, convert Muslim, female living in the United States. Here goes:”

I wish I could tell you about the beauty. I wish I could tell you that I took shahadah after being fascinated with Islam and seeing the goodness of Muslims. I wish I could tell you how I found a family, a community and a new place to exist. I really wish I could. And I wish that because I am quite aware of the fact that Muslims don’t want to hear my kind of story. It’s too painful and too much truth for one person to digest. The reality is my convert experience has been a rocky one. It has been, at times, fraught with doubt and confusion as to why I chose to be a part of this community and around these particular people. Once the initial convert zeal wore off, I found myself in a miserable circumstance.

Many of you are quite aware of my story. For those who aren’t I can give you the quick rundown. I converted to Islam when I was 17 years old. I was initially part of the predominately African-American masjid where I took shahadah but became distant from the community after it folded due to mismanagement, personal scandals and a failure to help new converts like myself navigate the pitfalls of the larger world around us. Unwittingly, I fell in with members of the Tablighi Jumat (though I never officially joined it) and eventually the Salafi movement (which I also never officially joined) because my Muslim friends and support were part of these movements. I was only able to maintain that level of Islam for a couple years before I found myself burnt out, tired and wanting more. I “took a break” from practicing Islam for several years. I eventually found my way back after I moved to South Florida and became part of a Caribbean Indian and Indo-Pak mixture community. That is where it all began…

If you ask me what it has been like to be a Black, convert, Muslim, female I will reiterate it has been rough. Having spent most of my Muslim experience in non-Black immigrant communities, I have faced a great deal of racism, sexism and colorism. Though I often heard how we are “all Muslim” and have been reminded of the Prophet’s (s.a.w.) last sermon where he says, “All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action,” the reality amongst Muslims was and is far from the ideal. Beyond all the beautiful speeches given to me by my Indian, Pakistani, Caribbean Indian, and Arab brothers and sisters I realized that being Black, a woman and a convert made me less than. The litmus test was marriage. I watched as my fair-skinned Latina friends were repeatedly asked for their hand in marriage. I watched as the White female converts were held in high esteem and absorbed into immigrant Muslim families (their babies will be so fair, mashallah!) and I laughed inwardly at the sisters’ tales of being proposed to at the annual ISNA convention because that NEVER happened to me. Yet, I continued to subject myself to this mistreatment because I didn’t know what else I was supposed to do. It occurred to me that my presence was being tolerated. I was angry at myself because the Afrocentric movement was what had led me to Islam. Before becoming Muslim I was confident and proud of the color of my skin, the texture of my hair, the shape of my nose and of my slave ancestors. How did I move from that to being ashamed of taking off my hijab at sisters’ only events? How could I sit silently as people insulted my skin color or asked me if I was a convert or Muslim? What happened to me?

I eventually woke up. I divorced the Arab husband I was married to, left the masjid that I had been attending and rediscovered/reclaimed my identity. I was free and ready to reconnect with my people, Black people. One would think that moving to a predominately African-American Muslim community would’ve been better for me. I thought I would find myself welcomed into my local W.D. Muhammad masjid with full and open arms. I was coming home! However, from the moment I set foot in the masjid I immediately knew I was an outsider, not to be welcomed in. This time it wasn’t because of my skin color or cultural background. I was an outsider because I wasn’t part of the Nation of Islam experience and I didn’t have an entire family who was. I was also an outsider because I was attractive, single and a threat to the sisters. The fact that I wore abayas, full hijab and tended to be more conservative (due to the years I spent in immigrant Muslim communities) didn’t help either. Sure, I could come to Jumah, participate in community events or even help out with the tasks the masjid administration assigned to me but I got the message loud and clear: don’t think you’re going to come in here and change things or try to be a better Muslim than us. Nepotism was the order of the day and I had no family connections.

Outside of the Muslim community I found myself in a strange predicament. Before 9/11 people would assume that I was from the Nation of Islam. That’s what being Black and Muslim meant. However, after 9/11 I was suddenly “foreign” and from “over there.” People assumed I didn’t speak English, that I was passive and docile, and that someone was forcing me to cover my hair and body. The strangest part of all was that Black people no longer recognized me as Black. My light brown skin (once considered too dark in Arab and Indian/Pakistani communities) combined with my hijab made people assume I was East African or a “Black Arab.” There were no head nods, complicit glances, or casual words spoken to me from other Black people. Somehow, being Black meant you had to be Christian. To be anything else was to be a cultural apostate.

One may ask, why be Muslim then? Why don’t you just leave? Why subject yourself to this? After all, I have had so many negative experiences in the Muslim community. Best believe that I have asked myself these questions many times since I converted. To sit here and say that I haven’t would be a lie. So, why do it? Why remain here? I believe without a doubt or hesitation that there is no nothing or no one worthy of worship of worship except Allah (who has no partners, no equals, no sons) and that the Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah is his messenger and the seal of all Prophets. If I left Islam where would I go and who would I be? Despite the negative experiences I have had and continue to have, the Quran has offered me guidance and peace during these tumultuous times. After all, when I am focused, when I remind myself of my purpose, when I lay that rug out and face the kiblah, I remember that there is nothing and no one else in the world except me and Allah.

Iam a Black Muslim but NOT Nation Of Islam

It’s almost inevitable, if you’re African American (or even African) and people find out you’re Muslim the first question out of their mouths (well, maybe second after “Where are you from?” regardless of whether or not you have an accent of any sort) is if you’re part of Nation of Islam. This is just wrong!

Just because Iam Black Muslim doesnt mean I belong to Nation of Islam.

Marriage is half our deen but a majority of people cause it to be so complicated to comlete. Many reasons exist with this, some with regards to race, some regarding status, some concerning wealth and certain about whether your a revertor simply a “born” muslim. I have listed some issues effecting Black Muslims and Muslims in general Worldwide, therefore we have to reserve these differences for the betterment of the Ummah

We must affect the mind set of the Older generation, who are often “stuck” in their ways and faciliate better understanding with the Newer Generation. Sometimes an individual is looked down upon if he/she is not of a certain class or does not come from a certain country and sometimes because the potential spouse is not from the same tribe as them. These issues are the issues of Jahiliyah and should not be so prevalent in the Ummah today. Inshallah some people in the Ummah will realise that these particular practises are Un-Islamic and hopefully turn back to the Deen in this aspect.
